Industry: When a company’s recovery is through its employees
Workers are the first to be affected by the closure of their businesses, sometimes collectively deciding to bounce back by becoming worker-entrepreneurs. Some companies have been successfully taken over by employees. That’s the step-by-step plan Scop Ti has survived since the takeover of the tea factory (formerly L’Éléphant, Fralib) near Marseille in 2014. They have tasted the entrepreneurship and input of ideas, so this revival is a hit. 1336, the brand launched by these employee-entrepreneurs, has been an inspiration to others.
Like the MBF aluminum foundry in Haut-Jura, some entrepreneurs go to work when they learn that the company they employ has been liquidated. The employees of this factory, which counts a lot in the local economy, but also in the culture, have chosen to join forces so that the company is not rolled out. This alloy in the form of a SCOP was believed by the employees to be vervain. However, a heavy sky falls on their heads: the confirmation of the liquidation of the MBF foundry by the Court of Appeal at the end of 2021. No doubt this experience will have set these entrepreneurs in the iron for a day, but it will also enable some posed to consider (and realize) a revival toward corporate creation. Every setback is a source of learning and forges entrepreneurs.
Rebirth” Made in France “
Diversify to bounce back… Buying out a brand and more generally a company is a rebirth for the one being bought out, but also a real upswing for the one who invests. Some companies have lost their luster and before they take their last breath are sometimes revived by companies that want to run. For example, the company Lemoine, which bought the Peaudouce brand: the leader in baby diapers of the 1980s, disappeared in 1999. However, it was reborn after its acquisition by the Lemoine company in 2020, which decided to put on a diaper again . !
This diversification for the group allows her to take her first steps in early childhood, but above all gives new life to a well-known French brand that had collapsed. It will be difficult to find a place in the diaper market, but the company is counting on its expertise and the reputation of its new baby to play in the big leagues by juggling between 100% digital strategy, French and organic production to new parents.
Craftsmanship: from customer to buyer
Being an entrepreneur, whether it is a ZBO, an SME, an ETI or a company, means (also) having to make difficult decisions. When the unexpected jeopardizes the activity, you need to know how to arbitrate and decide. This was the case in 2022 for the owner of the Vert-Pré butcher shop in Mouvaux. This craftsman of almost 20 years had to declare his company (in which he started as an apprentice 35 years ago) bankrupt. But before the court made short work of it, the town’s shop was saved by two loyal customers. On the menu: taking over the company and maintaining the team and the activity without changing the recipe.
Sometimes rebound solutions exist before leaving for the slaughterhouse that the entrepreneur does not necessarily think of. Rebound opportunities can come from people around you, from customers, partners, employees, colleagues or organizations… It’s important to be well surrounded and dare to speak up!
