biotech: Clinical testing vaccinate against cancer
After the launch of clinical trials with a cancer vaccine developed by the company BioNtech, with the aim of treating up to 10,000 patients by 2030, the results of these trials will be evaluated in the long term. This was stated by cancer surgeon of the Salah Azaiez Institute, Hatem Bouzaine, while adding that prevention, early diagnosis and smoking cessation reduce the risk of cancer diseases. According to Dr Bouzaine, this experiment began in December 2022 while recalling that the BioNtech company had already manufactured a vaccine against Covid-19. Bouzaine also stressed the importance of early diagnosis, prevention, exercise, healthy diet and smoking cessation, saying that these studies are very important for the treatment of cancer diseases.
Visible electronic stamp: 79 official documents are protected
The Ministry of Communications Technologies has just communicated the 2022 results of its progress in the generalization of visible electronic seals. In 2022, the department has been working to increase the number of administrative documents protected by the visible electronic seal known as TN CEV 2D-Doc in collaboration with the National Electronic Certification Agency (Ance-TunTrust).
A project with several objectives, including the protection of official documents and the data they contain against all forms of fraud and forgery, the phasing out of the legalized signature and traditional stamps, the use of original documents and the abolition of certified copy and the extraction of official documents through the special portals and their delivery through the post office after a secure verification. The overseeing ministry has specified that 79 official documents are now protected by a visible electronic seal. These documents relate to 18 administrations. Think of the National Trade Register, the certificate of professional competence, university diplomas or even the work permit for foreigners and the vaccination certificate. In total, 9.8 million copies will have been issued with the visible electronic stamp in 2022, of which 8.6 million between vaccination certificates and passports via the Evax.tn platform, reports our colleague THD.
HCA: Sustainability at the heart of the “connected home”
At CES 2023, the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA) announced a milestone with the release of the HCA Specification 1.0 for Cloud-to-Cloud (C2C) interoperability in connected home solutions. The launch of this new industry standard comes just a year after the organization’s launch at last year’s CES event. The HCA is an organization formed by manufacturers of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, home appliances and televisions. The HCA was established with the aim of formulating secure guidelines aimed at the interoperability of connected home ecosystems. As a co-founder of the alliance, Samsung Electronics remains committed to innovation. This includes the SmartThings platform, which contributes to the HCA’s mission to develop industry standards and guidelines that enable interconnectivity. The launch of the HCA Specification 1.0 therefore paves the way for improving energy efficiency throughout the consumer’s ‘connected home’ experience through holistic data. Customers can improve their energy IQ by identifying the devices in their home that use the most energy and adjusting their consumption accordingly. In addition, innovations like SmartThings’ AI energy mode enable consumers to automatically manage their energy usage and costs with smart, instant insights through a single app on their phone. The HCA Specification 1.0 enables connected brands to deliver sustainability-focused, actionable insights to consumers to improve energy efficiency and realize real savings.
Madar Innovation: For an ecosystem innovative entrepreneurial and dynamic
Recognizing that the Tunisian ecosystem of innovation and start-ups suffers from a strong centralization and a blatant lack of cooperation between the different actors, despite a strong development potential observed since 2011, the need to deploy decentralization efforts became apparent to spread the benefits of innovative enterprises across the country.
In addition, access to finance, especially through investors and donors, is also a major obstacle to the growth of start-ups and the diffusion of innovation. This applies to startups in the seed stage as well as to those that have reached a more advanced stage. To overcome these shortcomings that are hindering this new momentum driving the Tunisian entrepreneurial ecosystem, Impact Partner and New Silk Roads have launched the Madar Innovation project. This project is funded by the European Union (EU), supported by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and implemented by Expertise France, as part of the EU4Innovation, Innov’i program of the European Union. Since its inception, the program has offered 2 acceleration cycles for companies seeking access to finance and for companies seeking access to the market. The acceleration program focused on the real needs of entrepreneurs according to maturity level. It was also hands-on by minimizing theory. In addition to acceleration, the program has supported 12 entrepreneurship support structures in the regions with the aim of improving their offerings and better supporting their communities. These structures are located in Djerba, Sousse, Le Kef, Sfax, Kairouan, Mahdia, Regueb and Jendouba.
Two of them received increased support for the launch of a Fast Track program for their communities, fully funded by Madar Innovation. In addition, three other support structures in the capital, which already have their incubation or acceleration programs, were also supported in their fundraising and impact measurement efforts. These are Minassa, Connect’innov and The Next Women Tunisia. In the end, 22 companies were accelerated. The latter are active in various sectors with a high development potential and impact, such as education, circular economy, green, health and many others. Of these companies, 60% were (co-)founded by women, 68% have the Start-up label and 95% have salable products or services.
