That's it, the world's number 2 electric car finally arrives in France

Chinese manufacturer BYD will be present at the Paris Motor Show, which will be held from October 17 to 23, while the marketing of cars in Europe should start in the fourth quarter of 2022.

BMW, Audi, Citroën, Ferrari, Hyundai, Kia, Porsche, Toyota… Not all the manufacturers mentioned will be present at the next “Paris Motor Show” which will take place from 17 to 23 October at Porte de Versailles, Paris. Trade shows no longer appeal to manufacturers for various reasons : exorbitant participation costs, low media attention (one novelty drives out another) and little (or no) profitability.

Many manufacturers, including French, will therefore not participate in this year’s Paris Motor Show. However, the Football World Cup returns with a new formula after a four-year absence due to the health crisis. Though the absent will be many, several manufacturers will be present, and especially those who have new products to present. Among those who will have a booth, there will be in particular Peugeot, Renault, Alpine and DS among the French, Mercedes, Smart, Jeep, or even a few brands still relatively unknown to the general public such as hydrogen car manufacturers Hopium and NamX.

An arrival in Europe at the end of the year

And among the manufacturers who are starting to become known and present at the Paris event will be BYD (Build your dreams). The Chinese brand has just announced this in a press release. So the public will have the opportunity to discover a new manufacturer, and not least as it is the number 2 electric car in the world.

At the moment, BYD is not yet established in the European Union, but however, the brand has been marketing its Tang SUV in Europe and more specifically in Norway since 2021. Why Norway? Simply because it is the most mature European market in terms of electric cars and it is a good laboratory for future development in the Old Continent.

BYD in France at the end of the year?

BYD will therefore be present at the Paris Motor Show and will take advantage of the large mass of the car to make its products better known to customers who will soon see these models hitting the road. Because at the same time, BYD plans to expand its distribution network in Europe from the fourth quarter of 2022.

We don’t yet know if the French market will be affected by a year-end arrival, as BYD has not yet formalized the list of affected countries for the end of 2022. In the party, however, there should be the Netherlands, since the Chinese brand recently joined forces with the Dutch Louwman, one of the main distributors in Europe.

BYD in a nutshell

For the record, BYD Company was founded in 1995 and today controls nearly 65% of the world nickel cadmium battery market. He’s also the world leader in lithium-ion batteries with a market share of 30%. Contrary to what one might think, the main customers are not car manufacturers, but mobile phone manufacturers such as Nokia or Samsung. Then, in 2003, BYD sought to diversify into the automotive industry with the acquisition of Qichuan Automobile Company, a Chinese small car manufacturer.

The beginnings of the industry were complicated, especially because of the Chinese authorities’ plan to consolidate the industry around the big state brands. However, BYD has laid a solid foundation and in 2008 even participated in a European car show, that of Geneva, with the presentation of a plug-in hybrid sedan, the F3DM. In Europe, BYD sells and produces electric buses, forklifts and trucks. The brand even has a factory in Hungary where it employs 300 people and produces up to 400 electric buses per year.

Which models for our market?

When BYD markets an electric city car, two SUVs, a minivan and a sedan in China, only one electric SUV is available in the catalog in Norway: the BYD Tang. It is also this model that should appear on our roads in a few months.

The BYD Tang is a large seven-seater SUV equipped with a battery capacity of 86.4 kWh capacity allowing it to display a range of 400 km in the mixed WLTP cycle and up to 528 km according to the same standard in an urban environment. In terms of efficiency, we are doing much better, with a Tesla Model Y, for example, covering 533 km in the combined cycle on a battery of about 80 kWh.

The Tang integrates a 7 kW built-in charger with DC charging up to 110 kW. The car is equipped with a 180 kW (about 245 hp) strong electric motor, sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 180 km/h. It is being marketed for 619,900 Norwegian kroner, so about 62,500 euros excluding VATas there is no tax on electric vehicles in Norway.
