Even though the design of Renault’s new concept car pays homage to past glories, it’s meant to be functional. In particular, the manufacturer specifies that the air intake dug into the hood contains a hatch for charging the battery pack, which is located under the floor. The power is also set at 42 kWh. The autonomy is not specified, but Renault ensures that charging takes two hours on a 380V charger.

Mounted on a tubular chassis, this strict two-seater accommodates two Carbon Fiber Racing Seat bucket seats fitted with safety harnesses. These chairs with a vintage tartan pattern are made by specialist Sabelt. Drift car mandatory, the passenger compartment of the R5 Turbo 3E contains a vertical handbrake control integrated into a yellow center console, as do the exterior air intakes. The floor is made of cork and the dashboard is partly covered with Alcantara.

Installed at the wheel of this Renault R5 Turbo 3E concept car, the driver has ten screens in front of his eyes, inevitably reminiscent of the ten analogue dials of the Turbo 2. These small widgets can display “graphic expressions” that Renault says are inspired by pixel art and glitch art. The inspiration of the video game is evoked by the driving modes, which are called “turbo”, “doughnut” or even “track invader”. A teddy bear named Drifty is even on board to “comfort the passengers who have been gripped by the power of the show car”. Of what deed.

Accompanied by a virtual double in the form of NFT, the Renault R5 Turbo 3E is therefore presented by the French manufacturer in Chantilly. It will then be exhibited at the Mondial de l’Auto, in Paris, from October 17 to 23, 2022.

What are the measurements?

The Renault R5 Turbo 3E concept car is the direct descendant of the mythical R5 Turbo 2. The car is 25 centimeters wider and has a total width of 2.02 meters. It also measures 4 meters in length and 1.32 meters in height. The wheelbase is set at 2.54 meters, and the weight reaches one and a half tons, including batteries.

Is the new electric Renault 5 made for drifting?

The new concept car, called R5 Turbo 3E, is inspired by the mythical Renault 5 and is above all a drift car. The car is based on a tubular chassis and has a double electric motor whose 380 hp for 700 Nm of torque is transmitted to the rear wheels only. The cockpit contains a vertical handbrake control to facilitate the realization of slides. A driving mode even makes it easier to make donuts!

What is its maximum speed?

Thanks to its 380 hp, the new electric R5 Turbo 3E can reach 200 km/h according to Renault. The manufacturer also indicates that the car shoots from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.5 seconds, or in 3.9 seconds when the Drift mode is switched on.

What does the interior of the concept look like?

In the concept car that Renault will unveil at the Paris Motor Show in 2022, only two bucket seats are present. The seats of this two-seater bombinette have a vintage tartan pattern, while the floor is cork and the dashboard is Alcantara. This same dashboard houses ten small screens that take the form of widgets and replace the Turbo 2’s ten dials. Finally, a teddy bear named Drifty is present on board, only to comfort passengers who are not used to practice drifting.

What price for the Renault R5 Turbo 3E?

With its futuristic design and drifter character, the Renault R5 Turbo 3E is destined to remain a concept car. Renault is therefore careful not to announce a release date, and a price for another month for this sports version of its legendary city car. This concept car is simply presented to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Renault 5.

In brief

At first glance, the Renault 5 is not really a drift car. Le Losange challenges this preconception by unveiling the Renault R5 Turbo 3E in 2022, an electric concept car directly inspired by the legendary R5 Turbo 2. With its aerodynamic design characterized by a huge spoiler and prominent air intakes, this R5 Turbo 3E makes impression. The car is based on a tubular chassis and has two electric motors whose 380 hp for 700 Nm of torque is transmitted to the rear wheels only. The R5 Turbo 3E accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and can reach a top speed of 200 km/h. Inspired by pixel art, glitch art and video games, the interior includes a vertical handbrake control to facilitate sliding. There are also ten small digital counters in the form of widgets. Presented at the Chantilly Concours d’Elegance, this Renault R5 Turbo 3E is also one of the stars on the manufacturer’s stand at the 2022 Paris Motor Show.
