Mégane E-Tech, the Renault demonstration in numbers

15,580 is the number of 100% electric Renault Mégane E-Tech sold by Renault in France in 2022, while it wasn’t even a whole year of marketing! The French compact thus immediately rises to fourth place in the top of electric sales, despite only arriving at the dealership in the spring, behind the well-established Peugeot e-208 (19,222 units), the Dacia Spring (18,326 sales) and the Tesla Model 3 (17,005 units). What, with the 12,655 Twingo (sixth place) and 12,182 Zoé (seventh place) sold in the same period, Renault the main brand in the top 10 electric in France with 40,417 combined sales. The second largest player in the top 10, Tesla places just two cars there, the Model 3 and Model Y, for 28,897 combined sales.

Well priced

If the gamble to release an electric Renault Mégane while the thermal version of the same name is still in the catalog could raise questions at first glance, it must be assumed that Renault has hit the mark as the two coexist well to exist. The Renault Mégane has been sold a total of 33,399 times in all energies (including 17,819 thermal and hybrid) over the whole of 2022, making it still a safe bet, even if its success is mainly due to the very encouraging start to the electric version’s career. It must be said that the Frenchman has several strings to her bow, for starters two battery levels, the smallest of which (40 kWh) yields a call price of €39,000. In the end it is a fairly small difference with a Renault Zoé R110 (from € 35,100) which certainly has better autonomy with its 52 kWh battery, but which also ages and falls behind in everything else. Because between up-to-date technologies, an infinitely sexier design than the Zoé and very convincing road performance, the Renault Mégane E-Tech has something to seduce.

A future complementary electric range

Renault wanted it especially compact, with only 4.21m long against 4.36 m for the traditional thermal Renault Mégane. A choice prompted by the imminent arrival of the diamond manufacturer’s electric offering, scheduled for 2024/2025. Thereby, the Renault Mégane E-Tech is inserted between the Renault 5, which itself plays the double role of replacement for the current Twingo E-Tech and Zoé which are not renewed, and a new electric Scénic which will casually swap its minivan style to get closer to that, more fashionable, SUV. Enough to satisfy the vast majority of the European market in terms of interior volume, Renault is not going to play in the field of large premium SUVs. But of the city SUV, it will also be in demand in the French range, with the model that will emerge from the 4Ever Trophy concept. With a length of approximately 4.15 m, this Renault 4 (or even R4, 4L, etc., whose final name is not yet known at the time of writing this article) will therefore have a length very close to of the first generation Captur. to be the crossover bent of the electric R5.

If the Peugeot e-208 has recently received a new, more powerful electric motor in its GT version, such as the Dacia Spring Extreme, and the Tesla Model Y could gain some more market share in 2023, then it will be interesting to see how far the Renault Mégane can go.
